Check out combination heating boilers for space saving
If you are about to install a new gas boiler you should study a combi boiler if you have a shortage of storage space. You only need a combi gas boiler and balanced flue to set up a full central heating system without any other components. Add in radiators and copper pipe and you are then able to heat your home. Your first consideration could be astounded and considered that some parts had been missed out from the system. The hot water storage cylinder, the feed and expansion cylinder normally put in the attic, the central heating pump and other component parts that central heating and hot water systems seem to need.
Surprisingly a combi boiler does not require any of these parts. With a combination you can dispense with the hot water storage tank, room in the attic can be saved by leaving out the feed and expansion tank, the other petite component parts we have mentioned are in reality built into the combination heating boiler. So you can see with a combi boiler you can save a substantial amount of storage space within your dwelling house.
Combination boilers are not a new boiler design. The combi has been more popular in the Continent than in the U.K., but is now being installed more frequently as an alternative to the traditional wall mounted boiler. By comparison with orthodox boilers you will see that there are two major divergences. On the central heating side you still have a fully pumped system but all the heated water which circulates around is sealed in. This removes any need for a feed and enlargement tank in the attic. A second gain is removing the need for the hot water storage cylinder as the boiler stores its own hot water.
As hot water is required it is produced immediately by the boiler, the boiler is aware of this when you turn on a hot water valve. The gas boiler can rapidly heat cold water by using an internal heat exchanger. Water from the sealed central heating circuit is heated and is diverted to the hot water heat exchanger heating it up. This permits cold mains water to be quickly heated before exiting the hot water valve.
Hot water provision to the radiators is a lower priority than the output of instantaneous hot water for the home. The instant the valve is shut the combi heating boiler will return to offering hot water to the radiators.
If you do have a space issue in your home you should give serious consideration to putting in a combi gas boiler when you next exchange your boiler.
