There are many different types of gas Central Heating Systems available to you. A heating boiler, radiator and pipework are common components in many of these Central Heating Systems, they are simple in plumbing terms.

There are two main types of Central Heating Systems; pumped/vented and sealed systems.
The vented/pumped one is more common of the two. Heating systems using the pump or vent process are equipped with a tank to allow for feeding of replacement water and expansion of heated water. Hot water from the storage tank supplies your kitchen and bath while also heating up the central heating radiators. The tank makes way for any water expansion that is caused by the heating process. The expansion tank is placed at highest spot to help create water pressure. It heats the house and doubles as the water supply.
Older homes generally have pumped/vented Gas Central Heating systems.
The sealed Gas Central Heating system is one that more and more people are opting for these days. As the name indicates, a sealed system is a an enclosed system therefore no expansion water tanks are needed. There are no pipework or tanks also in the attic, the system is sealed in the true sense and it has its own advantages.
- There is no chance of pipes freezing in the attic.
- There won’t be any repair work on the tank or pipes which will be in the attic for a pumped/vented system.
- The risk of leakage is diminished as there are fewer pipes and the system is less complex.
- As there are no open vents, air cannot enter into the system and so the risk of corrosion, air locks and sludge is drastically diminished.
- Can be easily rinsed out under pressure via the main water supply.
This central heating system is self contained incorporating all the safety devices and other important controls. The mains water supplies the water required for the sealed Gas Central Heating system. There is no hot water tank, so water is drawn directly from the main supply.
Normal variations of pressure can be allowed in a sealed system through a pressure vessel that contains compressed gas; this is separated from the sealed system water by a diaphragm. If the pressure is very high in the system, then the water will escape from the safety valve, and if the pressure is too low, then the safety valve will open to let the water in.
As compared to other heating systems, Gas Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
